Why Grind Size Matters
One of the biggest secrets to a great cup of coffee isn't the machine — it's the grind. Getting your grind size right can mean the difference between a bitter, over-extracted brew and a smooth, perfectly balanced cup. Whether you're enjoying our Cinnabun, Mocha, or French Vanilla, the right grind will make those flavors pop.
The Grind Size Spectrum
Extra Coarse
Best for: Cold brew coffee. Extra coarse grinds steep slowly in cold water over 12–24 hours, producing a smooth, low-acidity concentrate that pairs beautifully with sweeter flavors.
Coarse
Best for: French Press. The larger particles steep in hot water and get filtered out by the press, leaving a full-bodied, rich brew. Try it with our Pecan Pie or Hazelnut for a deeply satisfying cup.
Medium-Coarse
Best for: Chemex and pour over brewers with thick filters. Produces a clean, bright cup that highlights subtle flavor notes.
Medium
Best for: Drip coffee makers — the most common household brewer. This is the sweet spot for everyday brewing and works wonderfully with all of our KoolBeanz flavored coffees.
Medium-Fine
Best for: Pour over methods like the Hario V60. Allows for a slightly more controlled extraction.
Fine
Best for: Espresso machines. Fine grinds pack tightly and allow high-pressure water to extract deep, concentrated flavors quickly. Our Dubai Chocolate makes an incredible espresso shot.
Extra Fine
Best for: Turkish coffee. Ground almost to a powder, this produces a thick, strong brew with a unique texture.
Pre-Ground vs. Freshly Ground
Pre-ground coffee is convenient, but freshly ground coffee gives you the best flavor. Coffee starts losing its aroma within minutes of grinding. If you have a grinder at home, grind just before brewing for the freshest cup possible.
Tips for Grinding Flavored Coffee
- Clean your grinder regularly — flavor oils from one coffee can linger and affect the next.
- Start with a medium grind if you're unsure and adjust from there.
- Flavored coffees can sometimes grind slightly differently due to flavor coatings — a medium setting is usually your safest bet.
